52 Week Art Challenge: Week 11

Week 11 birds for my 52 week art challenge. It's been a very busy couple weeks in the studio. I've been working on launching our Mother's Day, Father's Day and Graduation cards. The main page of our website just got a little facelift and a new wholesale catalog is in progress. Phewww. More coffee is in order. Needless to say, it took me a little longer to get my Chickadees done. A very tropical design is in the works already for Friday, so stay tuned.

I created this week's art first with a sketch on paper then I inked the design with a Micron pen. After that I scanned my art and brought it into Photoshop, where I added color and texture.

Hop over to Instagram and use the hashtag #spankysartparty to see what everyone has been working on. We have so many people participating now! And it's not too late to join us. Jump in at any point, it's okay! Just do what you can. You can always go back and catch up later if you want to. Make sure to tag all of your work with our hashtag #spankysartparty so we can all find it.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 10

Week 10 finished art for my 52 week art challenge. I love humming birds so much. 🌸 They are beautiful and really funny to watch interact with each other. We have lots of them that live near by and they are always zipping around and chirping at me. They zoom around me in circles, probably warning me to move on, but I can't help but laugh. They are fiercely territorial and will fight off anyone that gets in the way of their next meal, you know, in the cutest/tiniest way possible. For such small birds, they sure do have the courage of lions.

I created this week's art first with a sketch on paper then I inked the design with a Micron pen, as usual. After that I digitally painted the design with the Procreate app on my iPad. From there I took the piece into photoshop to adjust the layout and do the finishing touches. I love this one so much. It's going to be added to my spoonflower shop very soon.

Yesterday I found out that I am the lucky winner of the Spoonflower 2016 Tea Towel Calendar contest! With over 300 entires and some fierce competition, I am grateful and honored to have won this year's contest. I kind of can't believe it still. Thank you so much to everyone who voted, commented and/or purchased. It means the world to me!

The fabric can be purchased from my Spoonflower shop individually or as part of the top 10 bundle, where you get all top 10 winners' designs. They are all beautiful and would make great christmas gifts for friends and family (basic sewing skills required - something I really need to learn).

Bits & Pieces

This year one of my goals was to improve my pattern design skills. One of the main ways I've been working towards this is by participating in the weekly Spoonflower design contest. Every week is a different subject matter giving me the chance to create a wide range of patterns. This week's contest is extra special because Spoonflower teamed up with Moda Fabrics for the annual Fabric8 design challenge. With over 800 entires and I was lucky enough to be one of 100 semi-finalists. Of those 100, 8 finalists will be chosen to create a whole collection based on their submitted design. And those 8 will be narrowed down to one winner. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that I get the chance to be one of the finalists. I would so love to create a collection that has the chance to be picked up by Moda. Below, I created mock-ups of a tote bag and pillow for some inspiration of what this pattern can be turned into. Now I just need to learn how to sew.

Pickles!

I've been doing a little sketchin' lately, ok a lot of sketchin'. This one started out as a "quick & simple" design for this week's Spoonflower contest. Half an hour max.. I was only going to draw the jar. Haha, right. Four hours later I had an entire page filled with everything the word pickle could bring to mind. I lose hours in my sketchbook. One minute it's 10am and the next thing I know Steve is in the kitchen making dinner. It's a very magical thing.

This week's sketch hit the scanner and quickly turned into just the darn cutest pickle pattern I've ever seen. I love the little sprigs of dill and the polka dot spices in the background. If you're on Spoonflower, hop over to vote in the contest. It will be open for the next few days before they announce the winner.
