52 Week Art Challenge: August

August's art was all about lettering. A personal favorite that should not be too surprising. The cactus design is putting big hearts in our eyes over here. This one is going to be coming to the shop soon!

52 Week Art Challenge: June

June's vegetable illustrations for Spanky's Art Party. I had fun this month playing with veggie studies and exploring the different shapes and variations of each kind. I added a little color and texture in photoshop to make them come alive. Check out what everyone has been working on on Instagram.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 17

The 52 Week Art Challenge is still going strong. And despite my lack of blogs posts keeping up with it, I'm very happy to say that each weekly piece of art is still being created on time! That in itself is a major accomplishment if I do say so myself. I'm going to play catch-up on blogs posts over the next couple weeks, so get ready for a serious art party on the blog. Nothing bad about that. Let's get this party started.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 13

Week 13 is here and it's all about flowers for the month of April. Spring has arrived in Charlotte. The flowers are blooming and there is a thick layer of yellow pollen all over everything. Hopefully some of this rain will help wash it away as the weather continues to warm up. For this week's art challenge, I drew a collection of wild flowers.

Below is my inked sketch. I used a Micron pen to ink over my pencil drawing then scanned and imported it into Photoshop. From there I digitally painted the color and added texture. I'm always partial to the black and white sketches. It's my favorite part of the process. The final version of this design is going to turn into a lovely spring pattern.

Hop over to Instagram and use the hashtag #spankysartparty to see what everyone has been working on. We have so many people participating now! And it's not too late to join us. Jump in at any point, it's okay! Just do what you can. You can always go back and catch up later if you want to. Make sure to tag all of your work with our hashtag #spankysartparty so we can all find it.

Pickles!

I've been doing a little sketchin' lately, ok a lot of sketchin'. This one started out as a "quick & simple" design for this week's Spoonflower contest. Half an hour max.. I was only going to draw the jar. Haha, right. Four hours later I had an entire page filled with everything the word pickle could bring to mind. I lose hours in my sketchbook. One minute it's 10am and the next thing I know Steve is in the kitchen making dinner. It's a very magical thing.

This week's sketch hit the scanner and quickly turned into just the darn cutest pickle pattern I've ever seen. I love the little sprigs of dill and the polka dot spices in the background. If you're on Spoonflower, hop over to vote in the contest. It will be open for the next few days before they announce the winner.

A behind the scenes view at the making of our new Father's Day cards. I just love the difference between the black and white drawing and the finished art, don't you? It's so exciting to see them come to life.

Don't forget, Father's Day is June 15th! You can find all of our cards here in the shop and also on Etsy.

Behind the Scenes with our Easter Cards

I've been having a lot of fun lately documenting the before and after pics of our recent new releases. I think it's so interesting to see the original sketch compared to the final product. Sometimes the drawings are used exactly as I made them and sometimes I put a lot of time into tweaking them digitally before I'm happy with how they look. Don't you just love how the color brings them to life? It amazes me every time. These are some the before and after shots of our new Easter cards.

Share Your Passion

I've been doing a lot of experimenting lately with hand lettering and discovered this video by Ryan Hamrick for Holstee. He talks about how he got started and his passion for creating his stunning work. I especially love that he talks about how he couldn't get the time to move fast enough when he was working regular 9-5 jobs, and now that he is doing something he loves he wishes he could slow it down instead. I remember having these days working office jobs, looking at the clock every five minutes thinking an hour must have passed since the last time I looked and just feeling that devastation when I realized it had only been five and a half minutes. Its funny how the days fly by now when I spend them in my studio. It's after 5p.m. before I even know it and I'm wishing for more time.

I thought it would be fun to share a recent piece I've been working on. It's fitting for the topic of this post today and I am really loving how it turned out. It's going to be part of my new personal portfolio site that I am working on to show some of my recent design and lettering work. I can wait to launch it to show off all my new goodies.
