52 Week Art Challenge: Week 8

Feeling pretty good about getting this one out on schedule. I'm currently in sunny Los Angeles at Papercamp learning all about stationery boss lady stuff. I'll be back in the studio on Monday to tell you all about it. For now, let's take a look at week 8 of my 52 week art challenge. For my last house, I decided to make a portrait of literally my last house. This is our first home together as a married couple back in Michigan. We are in the process of selling it, it will only be ours for another week or so. Onto new adventures, including March's theme: Birds!

I created this one in Photoshop, using Kyle T. Webster's texture brushes

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 7

The houses continue! Week 7 is coming at you with a sweet little European-inspired town. Makes me want to start planning a vacation. Speaking of vacations, I'm getting ready to head out to Los Angeles for Papercamp. I was the lucky winner of a scholarship to attend and I really couldn't be more grateful or completely excited. That's not really a vacation, but it's going to be just as good. The houses will continue next week then we move onto March's theme: Birds! (How is it almost March already?!)

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 3

Week 3 and the house plants continue! This one kind of has a West Elm meets Target vibe going on. Love. I used the same process to create this piece as the first two weeks. First with a sketch on paper, then I inked the design with a Micron pen. After that I digitally painted the design with the Procreate app on my iPad.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 1

My week 1 challenge is complete and I am absolutely blown away by the response I've been receiving on Instagram. We have tons of artists and designers taking part in this challenge. I'm so excited to be hosting it and cannot wait to see what you've all created. If you haven't joined us yet, we'd love to have you. You can read all about it right here.

week1-details

To tell you a little about how I approached this week's assignment, I always start with a drawing in my sketchbook. This week I drew in pencil and inked over it using Micron pens.

One of my goals for 2016 is to expand into hand painted art, so for this challenge I decided to hand paint this piece on my iPad using the Procreate app. It was $5.99 and worth every penny. I just recently purchased this app, so it's been a bit of a learning curve, however, its very easy to use once you get comfortable with it. Plus its a ton of fun. I love hand painted work, but I also love an undo button. So digital painting really seemed like a great place for me to start. When I was done in Procreate, I finished it up on the computer with Photoshop.

Join me in a 52 week art challenge!
52 week art challenge

I'm starting a 52 week art challenge and am inviting you to join me!

With the objective to build a better portfolio, the challenge is to create one new piece of art each week. Each month will have a different theme, so that at the end of the year we'll all have 12 new collections with a total of 52 new pieces. Sounds pretty good, right? It also sounds extremely possible to me. And that's the point. It has to be reasonable, otherwise when life gets hectic, it won't get done. So spend as little or as much time as you can on these, just make sure it fits your schedule.

I'll be posting my art here and also on Instagram every Friday. Follow along with me @jaymesloan

To join the challenge, all you need to do it create your art and post it on Instagram with the hashtag #spankysartparty so that we can all see what everyone is creating. That hashtag requires some explaining, but that is a story for another day. So for now, let's just run with it.

Remember, create a piece that's true to you. Let your imagination run wild. You can draw anything you want within each theme. And, most importantly, think about each month as a collection so that at the end of the month, you're art has a cohesive look to it. Pinterest is an excellent place to get some inspiration.

January: House Plants
February: Houses
March: Birds
April: Flowers
May: Cities
June: Gardens
July: Farmers Market
August: Lettering
September: Coffee & Tea
October: Travel
November: Cooking
December: Pets

Ready. Set. Go! I can't wait to see what you create.

P.S. If you plan to join the challenge, please leave a comment with your Instagram name so I can follow you.
