"How do you do that?"

Hello lovelies! It's been a busy week. I've been meeting with vendors, making new product lines, shipping orders and everything in between. Lately, I've been getting a lot of questions about how I make my art. Specifically about how I take the black and white sketches that I post on Instagram from my sketchbook and turn them into full color illustrations. There are a lot of different ways to do this. I use a few different methods depending on what I'm making, its end use and what I feel like doing < the perks of being your own boss. Typically I use either Photoshop, Illustrator or Procreate. No matter which direction I go, my art always starts on paper, that's where I think best, and then I add color and texture digitally. It's a hybrid of traditional and digital media.

In the method I'm showing you here, the process went like this:
Pencil drawing on paper
Inked drawing with black marker (inking is not necessary for this method)
iPhone photo of drawing imported into the Procreate app on my iPad
Played with color and textured in Procreate until it looked cute enough to stop :)

Now if I could only illustrate everything that fast! xo

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 8

Feeling pretty good about getting this one out on schedule. I'm currently in sunny Los Angeles at Papercamp learning all about stationery boss lady stuff. I'll be back in the studio on Monday to tell you all about it. For now, let's take a look at week 8 of my 52 week art challenge. For my last house, I decided to make a portrait of literally my last house. This is our first home together as a married couple back in Michigan. We are in the process of selling it, it will only be ours for another week or so. Onto new adventures, including March's theme: Birds!

I created this one in Photoshop, using Kyle T. Webster's texture brushes

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 7

The houses continue! Week 7 is coming at you with a sweet little European-inspired town. Makes me want to start planning a vacation. Speaking of vacations, I'm getting ready to head out to Los Angeles for Papercamp. I was the lucky winner of a scholarship to attend and I really couldn't be more grateful or completely excited. That's not really a vacation, but it's going to be just as good. The houses will continue next week then we move onto March's theme: Birds! (How is it almost March already?!)

So today I thought it would be fun to show a little glimpse of my illustration process. This is something that I've been working on for a while now and I ended up writing a detailed explanation of the entire process, where I go into specifics on each step. If you're interested in seeing how I do it, hop over here and get the whole scoop.

Life Lessons: Five

Day five of the Life Lessons hand lettering group project - Finish this project first before starting the next. Amen. I am the queen of starting new projects before I can even finish the last one. I have so many ideas that I am constantly thinking of and am just so excited about all of them. I want to start working on them asap. My excitement gets the best of me sometimes. I received a gift for my birthday this year that is a coffee mug that says "I've got ideas I haven't even thought of yet" which is so completely fitting on the both counts, the quote and the fact that it aids in my coffee addiction. More information on this project and how to join in can be found here. View the entire collection on Pinterest.

Share Your Passion

I've been doing a lot of experimenting lately with hand lettering and discovered this video by Ryan Hamrick for Holstee. He talks about how he got started and his passion for creating his stunning work. I especially love that he talks about how he couldn't get the time to move fast enough when he was working regular 9-5 jobs, and now that he is doing something he loves he wishes he could slow it down instead. I remember having these days working office jobs, looking at the clock every five minutes thinking an hour must have passed since the last time I looked and just feeling that devastation when I realized it had only been five and a half minutes. Its funny how the days fly by now when I spend them in my studio. It's after 5p.m. before I even know it and I'm wishing for more time.

I thought it would be fun to share a recent piece I've been working on. It's fitting for the topic of this post today and I am really loving how it turned out. It's going to be part of my new personal portfolio site that I am working on to show some of my recent design and lettering work. I can wait to launch it to show off all my new goodies.
