"How do you do that?"

Hello lovelies! It's been a busy week. I've been meeting with vendors, making new product lines, shipping orders and everything in between. Lately, I've been getting a lot of questions about how I make my art. Specifically about how I take the black and white sketches that I post on Instagram from my sketchbook and turn them into full color illustrations. There are a lot of different ways to do this. I use a few different methods depending on what I'm making, its end use and what I feel like doing < the perks of being your own boss. Typically I use either Photoshop, Illustrator or Procreate. No matter which direction I go, my art always starts on paper, that's where I think best, and then I add color and texture digitally. It's a hybrid of traditional and digital media.

In the method I'm showing you here, the process went like this:
Pencil drawing on paper
Inked drawing with black marker (inking is not necessary for this method)
iPhone photo of drawing imported into the Procreate app on my iPad
Played with color and textured in Procreate until it looked cute enough to stop :)

Now if I could only illustrate everything that fast! xo

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 16

Week 16 was all about embracing the messy and trying to loosen up my illustrations. I like tight sketches and clean drawings, so coloring outside of the lines was something new for me. For some reason that messy and imperfect style is something I adore, but struggle with in execution. Baby steps.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 14

Week 14 finished art for my 52 week art challenge is here with a funky little bouquet. I'm using each week of this challenge to explore new methods, techniques and art styles. This week I wanted to try a new composition with unexpected colors. Trying new methods is the only way we will grow as artists. It's a messy process, sometimes you like what you make and sometimes you don't. And that's ok! It's all part of the journey. I stared at the color on this one for a long time and I'm still not sure it's perfect, but I think that's what I like about it. It has a weirdness that I'm really digging.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 13

Week 13 is here and it's all about flowers for the month of April. Spring has arrived in Charlotte. The flowers are blooming and there is a thick layer of yellow pollen all over everything. Hopefully some of this rain will help wash it away as the weather continues to warm up. For this week's art challenge, I drew a collection of wild flowers.

Below is my inked sketch. I used a Micron pen to ink over my pencil drawing then scanned and imported it into Photoshop. From there I digitally painted the color and added texture. I'm always partial to the black and white sketches. It's my favorite part of the process. The final version of this design is going to turn into a lovely spring pattern.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 12

Flamingos for week 12 of my 52 week art challenge! Who doesn't love a giant pink bird?! I definitely do. One day I want to go to Aruba and see them walking on the beach. That sounds so dreamy.

For this week's art, I started with a sketch and worked in Photoshop to do the color and layout adjustments.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 9

The weather is starting to warm up here in Charlotte and I can hear the birds chirping outside my window. We're starting March off right with this month's theme: Birds! My personal favorite.

I created this week's art first with a sketch on paper, then I inked the design with a Micron pen. After that I digitally painted the design with the Procreate app on my iPad. I really love working on the iPad, it's so much fun and it really speeds up the process.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 7

The houses continue! Week 7 is coming at you with a sweet little European-inspired town. Makes me want to start planning a vacation. Speaking of vacations, I'm getting ready to head out to Los Angeles for Papercamp. I was the lucky winner of a scholarship to attend and I really couldn't be more grateful or completely excited. That's not really a vacation, but it's going to be just as good. The houses will continue next week then we move onto March's theme: Birds! (How is it almost March already?!)

Pickles!

I've been doing a little sketchin' lately, ok a lot of sketchin'. This one started out as a "quick & simple" design for this week's Spoonflower contest. Half an hour max.. I was only going to draw the jar. Haha, right. Four hours later I had an entire page filled with everything the word pickle could bring to mind. I lose hours in my sketchbook. One minute it's 10am and the next thing I know Steve is in the kitchen making dinner. It's a very magical thing.

This week's sketch hit the scanner and quickly turned into just the darn cutest pickle pattern I've ever seen. I love the little sprigs of dill and the polka dot spices in the background. If you're on Spoonflower, hop over to vote in the contest. It will be open for the next few days before they announce the winner.
