Oooh, fancy new portfolio site!

I've been working on a new portfolio site to give my art a home, because I draw more than just cards you know. Maybe you didn't know that actually. Well, it's true. I draw A LOT and make a lot of art that is used for all kinds of things. I license that art to manufacturers for use on products. I sell it outright to companies. I put that art up for sale on websites like Spoonflower where you can purchase fabric, wallpaper and wrapping paper. It's so much fun! So here she is. A brand new home for all of my lovely illustrations. Have a look! If you're interested in licensing any of my art, let's have a chat and make that happen!

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 16

Week 16 was all about embracing the messy and trying to loosen up my illustrations. I like tight sketches and clean drawings, so coloring outside of the lines was something new for me. For some reason that messy and imperfect style is something I adore, but struggle with in execution. Baby steps.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 15

Week 15 art for my 52 week art challenge is here with some fun Japanese-inspired flowers. This started out as a pattern design for April's Spoonflower challenge with Sprout Patterns. That design ended up turning into a koi pond of all things, but more on that later.

This piece was created first in my sketchbook (see below) and then brought into Illustrator for layout and color.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 14

Week 14 finished art for my 52 week art challenge is here with a funky little bouquet. I'm using each week of this challenge to explore new methods, techniques and art styles. This week I wanted to try a new composition with unexpected colors. Trying new methods is the only way we will grow as artists. It's a messy process, sometimes you like what you make and sometimes you don't. And that's ok! It's all part of the journey. I stared at the color on this one for a long time and I'm still not sure it's perfect, but I think that's what I like about it. It has a weirdness that I'm really digging.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 12

Flamingos for week 12 of my 52 week art challenge! Who doesn't love a giant pink bird?! I definitely do. One day I want to go to Aruba and see them walking on the beach. That sounds so dreamy.

For this week's art, I started with a sketch and worked in Photoshop to do the color and layout adjustments.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 11

Week 11 birds for my 52 week art challenge. It's been a very busy couple weeks in the studio. I've been working on launching our Mother's Day, Father's Day and Graduation cards. The main page of our website just got a little facelift and a new wholesale catalog is in progress. Phewww. More coffee is in order. Needless to say, it took me a little longer to get my Chickadees done. A very tropical design is in the works already for Friday, so stay tuned.

I created this week's art first with a sketch on paper then I inked the design with a Micron pen. After that I scanned my art and brought it into Photoshop, where I added color and texture.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 9

The weather is starting to warm up here in Charlotte and I can hear the birds chirping outside my window. We're starting March off right with this month's theme: Birds! My personal favorite.

I created this week's art first with a sketch on paper, then I inked the design with a Micron pen. After that I digitally painted the design with the Procreate app on my iPad. I really love working on the iPad, it's so much fun and it really speeds up the process.

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 8

Feeling pretty good about getting this one out on schedule. I'm currently in sunny Los Angeles at Papercamp learning all about stationery boss lady stuff. I'll be back in the studio on Monday to tell you all about it. For now, let's take a look at week 8 of my 52 week art challenge. For my last house, I decided to make a portrait of literally my last house. This is our first home together as a married couple back in Michigan. We are in the process of selling it, it will only be ours for another week or so. Onto new adventures, including March's theme: Birds!

I created this one in Photoshop, using Kyle T. Webster's texture brushes

52 Week Art Challenge: Week 7

The houses continue! Week 7 is coming at you with a sweet little European-inspired town. Makes me want to start planning a vacation. Speaking of vacations, I'm getting ready to head out to Los Angeles for Papercamp. I was the lucky winner of a scholarship to attend and I really couldn't be more grateful or completely excited. That's not really a vacation, but it's going to be just as good. The houses will continue next week then we move onto March's theme: Birds! (How is it almost March already?!)

Wrapping up our month of house plants for week 4 of my 52 week art challenge. I ended up making two pieces this week, just for fun. Terrariums are my new favorite things to draw. I looooove them!

I used the same process to create this piece as the first three weeks. First with a sketch on paper, then I inked the design with a Micron pen. After that I digitally painted the design with the Procreate app on my iPad.

Pickles!

I've been doing a little sketchin' lately, ok a lot of sketchin'. This one started out as a "quick & simple" design for this week's Spoonflower contest. Half an hour max.. I was only going to draw the jar. Haha, right. Four hours later I had an entire page filled with everything the word pickle could bring to mind. I lose hours in my sketchbook. One minute it's 10am and the next thing I know Steve is in the kitchen making dinner. It's a very magical thing.

This week's sketch hit the scanner and quickly turned into just the darn cutest pickle pattern I've ever seen. I love the little sprigs of dill and the polka dot spices in the background. If you're on Spoonflower, hop over to vote in the contest. It will be open for the next few days before they announce the winner.

Life Lessons - Be Good

I'm back today with another life lesson. The last couple weeks have been quiet for me and I had to put down my sketchbook and pencil. Working all day and drawing all night has been putting tremendous strain on my wrist and I've been dealing with some carpal tunnel issues. So to rest and heal I have been limiting the time I spend sketching. This has not been easy and there has been more than a time or two where the husband has walked into the room to catch me drawing. And with that fact I think this is the perfect life lesson for everyone (myself included) today.

Day nine of the Life Lessons hand lettering group project: Be good - most of the time. I believe in being good. I am a rule follower by nature. I don't like to make waves. I think that you should obey the traffic laws and in general just be a good person. I also think there is a time and place to break the rules. I'm not talking about major laws here. I'm talking about the rules we as a society, and as individuals, put in place. The ones about how you shouldn't tell someone you don't like their new hair cut when they ask or keeping quiet just for the sake of politeness. Sometimes you have to speak up. And sometimes you just have to drink coffee at 1am. You know it's not a good idea at the time, but it doesn't matter. The fun you have doing it outweighs the consequences. The risks you take in life are often the things you remember the best.

be-good-web.jpg

This life lesson is extra special because it has been submitted to the Minted + West Elm design challenge. Submissions close on 4/26 and voting will begin. If you get over to Minted keep an eye out for my lettering!

More information on this project and how to join in can be found here. View the entire collection on Pinterest.
